Jason I've always like games - sports, board games, computer games. For nostalgia's sake, I introduced my kids to gaming and I discovered a whole new world beyond Clue, Sorry, and Life - the world of Hobby Gaming! So, here we go. I enjoy gaming because I love spending time and engaging with my kids.

Gaming Glossary

Abstract Game: mechanically strong, puzzle-style game with simple rules, no luck, strategic depth, and little to no theme, as in Chess

Ameritrash: highly thematic game characterized with lots of chrome, an emphasis on direct interaction with maybe even player elimination, and some randomness

Area Majority: game mechanic in which players contest for a majority in certain areas for benefits and victory conditions

Chrome: unnecessary components or extra rules that add to the theme of a game

Euro Game: style of strategy game first originating from Germany generally stressing mechanics over theme, limiting interaction, and minimizing luck

Fiddly: game that requires multiple physical or mental manipulations as in lots of pieces or components or calculations to deal with

Grognard: a serious war game player, generally of the very strategic type

Mechanic: rule or concept that drives gameplay

Meeple: playing pieces or pawns, generally "human-shaped"

Metagame: the "game within the game," taking some action for reasons not necessarily tied to your specific strategy or even the current game at all

Strategy: long-term plans you develop and intend to use in influencing the game's events

Tactics: short-term reactions you formulate in response to the development of the game's events

Theme: subjective "representation" that a game generates with its rules, mechanics, components, and design that makes you "feel" like you're doing more than just playing a game

Worker Placement: game mechanic in which player selects a certain role or action each turn thereby gaining specific benefits from that selection
